Tonight is Laos‘ celebration of the Buddhist festival, Wan Awk Pansa, the end of Buddhist Lent (Vassa).
These photos were taken at last year’s Wan Awk Pansa in Luang Prabang.
Large paper boats adorned with candles, some decorated with depictions from Buddhist mythology, are paraded down the main street of Luang Prabang and the procession gathers at Wat Xieng Tong before the boats are carried to the Mekong River and released. Fireworks and floating lanterns light up the sky. Those without boats carry candles, musical instruments, hand-held fireworks or flower offerings, dancing in masked costumes or traditional Lao dress.
